In Nyati III, a herd of buffaloes stands together against a vast red field. The red is not merely a background; it is emotion itself, intense, restless, alive. It speaks of strength, instinct, passion, and the invisible tensions that exist beneath stillness. The buffaloes embody resilience, unity, and quiet power. They are monumental, grounded, and impossible to ignore.
Yet, the painting is not truly about them. A single fly occupies the same space, insignificant in size but immense in its ability to attract attention. Despite the grandeur of the buffaloes, the eye searches for the fly, returns to it, and lingers on it. This shift in attention is at the heart of THE FLY series.

Born in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and based in Kochi, Kerala, Dr Mayera Suman is a contemporary artist working primarily through painting, she uses monochromatic animal forms, luminous grounds, scale, contrast, and negative space to create visually restrained yet conceptually layered compositions. Her ongoing series The Fly examines visual hierarchy and how the overlooked can become significant. Her work has been exhibited widely across India, including Jehangir Art Gallery, ICCR, India Habitat Centre, and the State Gallery of Art, Hyderabad.
Her work has received recognition through a Scroll of Honour from the Governor of West Bengal.
